Memphis Symphony recieves one million dollar gift

The Memphis Symphony Orchestra (MSO) announced yesterday that it has received a 1 million dollar gift from the Helen and Jabie Hardin Charitable Trust. The gift is for the purpose of enhancing the Symphony’s education and outreach programs while providing additional income to the orchestra’s musicians, who experienced substantial pay cuts this season.

“This gift reflects an inflection point for the orchestra,” according to Roland Valliere, MSO President and CEO. “It affirms the vital role of our musicians, without whom there would be no Memphis Symphony.”

The orchestra’s education program will be titled “The Hardin Charitable Trust Music Education Program.”

Through education and community programs such as Young People's Concerts, coaching in middle and high schools, ensembles in schools, and Family Tunes & Tales at libraries, the MSO encourages life-long learning. MSO musicians play an active and essential role in developing and delivering our education and community engagement programs.

Gayle S. Rose, chair of the MSO board, said the Hardin gift is among the largest donations ever received by the Symphony. “We are astounded by this momentous and transformative contribution that will benefit not only the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, but will enrich our entire community.”
