Memphis had the highest number of schools in Tennessee in the bottom five percent of academic success —
69 of 85 schools.
The state and
Shelby County Schools intervened. Born from the
bottom 5 percent were the Tennessee
Achievement School District and Memphis Innovation Zone, which includes Cherokee Elementary. Nashville, which had
six on the list, also started its own turnaround efforts.
Nearly four years later, the iZone has been able to show its schools are statistically improving more rapidly over schools in the state-run ASD,
according to a recent Vanderbilt University report. And it is outpacing Nashville's efforts
