Memphis Film Prize aims to increse local filmmaking

Lipscomb Pitts Breakfast Club announced a new partnership with the recently-launched Memphis Film Prize, a filmmaking competition from the Film Prize Foundation, creators of the a nationally-acclaimed, award-winning Louisiana Film Prize.

The Memphis Film Prize combines elements of a film contest and festival, inviting filmmakers from Memphis and around the world to shoot and present a five to fifteen-minute short film with just one rule– it must be shot in Shelby County, Tenn. – culminating in the Memphis Film Prize Festival Weekend where ten finalists will screen for the public and a panel of judges and compete for a $10,000 cash prize.

The Festival Weekend will be held in conjunction with the long-standing On Location: MEMPHIS Film & Music Fest on August 12 through 14. Filmmakers were allowed to begin shooting in February 2016 and must complete their rough cut film by midnight on June 14, when their projects are due to contest organizers.

"Memphis is an amazing place for independent film, and we're thrilled to bring the Film Prize to the Bluff City," said Gregory Kallenberg, Executive Director of the Film Prize Foundation.

From 2013 to 2015, Lipscomb Pitts Breakfast Club sponsored a “Memphis Rocks" category in the On Location: MEMPHIS International Film & Music Festival. The “Memphis Rocks’ category was designed to increase film making in Memphis.

“The ‘Memphis Rocks’ category was designed to promote local engagement, so we view the Memphis Film Prize as a natural evolution and an opportunity to do even bigger and better things for our city, in partnership with an organization that has a proven track record of success,” said Jeremy Park, President of the Lipscomb Pitts Breakfast Club. “This is an exciting chance for us to promote our city, celebrate creativity and the art of filmmaking, while also making an economic impact.”
