The Heights is a collection of neighborhoods situated between Jackson and Summer Avenues north-south and Graham Road and Tillman Street east-west, though the borders and name are decidedly flexible.

“Historically, the name was Highland Heights,” said Jared Myers, executive director of Heights CDC, a nonprofit founded in 2012 to address residents concerns like safety and housing.
But that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for individual identities.

“We don’t tell anyone what they should call their community ... On the same block you might have one person say they live in Nutbush, another person say they live in Berclair, and the person right next door to them claim Mitchell Heights,” said Myers.

While the name might be muddled, what’s clear is this diverse, working-class neighborhood has a long and interesting history and a promising future with renewed investment from active neighborhood associations, churches, schools, and community groups like Heights CDC.

The On the Ground team took a visual tour of the neighborhood to see what makes it an ideal place to live and work and a dynamic location for the next three months of embedded reporting.

Highland Heights United Methodist Church, located at 3476 Summer Avenue, is one of the oldest churches in the area, dating back to the late 1800s. It formerly met in a two-story community building that also served as a school and boarding house.
