Youngblood Builders Supply re-opens at 120-year-old location

A historic S. Memphis lumberyard and building supply store is unveiling a new name and new look this week. Youngblood Builders Supply is hosting a week-long grand reopening for its newly remodeled building supply store and five-acre lumberyard located at 40 West McLemore Ave. off Interstate 55 near downtown.

Rick and Don Youngblood bought the business (formerly Hyman Builders Supply) in November of last year from Billy Hyman, who had owned the company since 1964. The company was founded all the way back in 1896 as Jordan Lumber Company.

“Now that we’ve remodeled the store, we want to show that we’re a new company, that we’re refocused on commercial and contractor customers,” said Youngblood Builders Supply GM Dan Fuller. “We’ll still be serving walk-in customers that might come in just to buy a light bulb. We can do that also, where a lot of contractor yards really aren’t made for that.”

New additions to the 10,000-square-foot store include a paint department where customers can color match and mix Valspar paint and Cabot stains.

“We’ve renovated the entire store,” said Fuller, who’s worked for the business for more than 20 years. “We’ve done a lot of repairs to the place and put a new roof on the store. We changed the design of the aisles and brought in about 5,000 new items trying to focus back on the pro customer – the contractors and commercial people. We brought in more power tools, more safety equipment.”

The new store touts a complete selection of lumber, hardware, plumbing, electrical, welding, MRO, paint, millwork, roofing, and pro contractor products, and it also offers tool rental, key cutting, and glass cutting services.

In an effort to grow the business this year, a few new employees were hired to handle outside sales for the first time, and the company’s overall employee count has increased by nearly 20 percent since the start of the year.

To celebrate for its grand reopening event this week, the store is providing customers with giveaways and also hosting a daily drawing for prizes and offering “deals of the day” on featured items.
