Uptown

Uptown was Memphis’ first planned subdivision and unique for its economic and racial diversity. Its 100 blocks were home to employees of North Memphis’ booming manufacturing sector until the industrial decline in the mid 20th century. In 1999, efforts began to revitalize the area, including improvements to streetscapes, leveling the derelict Hurt Village housing project, and constructing new mixed-income housing. Attention now is turning to business development in the area, with hopes that the new nearby Brass Pro Shop and expansion of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital will anchor commercial growth.
