The Edge District

Destination Eats: Take it to The Edge for excellent eats

High Ground's signature "On the Ground" series embeds a team of journalists and photojournalists in a Memphis neighborhood for 1-6 months of intensive, hyper-local coverage.

While we're there, we eat. A lot.

We chose a different neighborhood restaurant every Friday for team lunches. We also like to hit up restaurants before we pen a profile on the business.

It's a tough job, but we're always ready to step up.

In "Destination Eats," we're rounding up some of the best restaurants we've covered in our 14 On the Ground neighborhoods.

This fifth installment takes us to The Edge District.

Like Madison Heights, The Edge District is part of the larger Medical District. It's a small neighborhood—it includes the area between and around Monroe, Madison, and Union avenues between Dunlap Street and Danny Thomas Boulevard—but it's home to  some excellent eats.

Sabor Caribe
662 Madison | 901-425-5889 | website
open Monday - Saturday | lunch & dinner

Sabor Caribe serves traditional Venezuelan and Caribbean foods like arepas, tequeños, and  pastelitos, as well as dishes unique to the restaurant like its Builder sandwich — french bread with grill beef or chicken, tomatoes, cabbage mix, potato sticks, and mozzarella cheese. Sabor Caribe is family owned and operated since 2016. Watch this short video to get your mouth watering:

Edge Alley
600 Monroe | 901-425-2605 | website
open Wednesday - Sunday | breakfast, lunch, dinner, & brunch

(Edge Alley)Edge Alley is known for their avocado toast, but their upscale fare goes far beyond that special staple. We love the dinner menu's ricotta gnocchi and crab and butter bean hush puppies. For daytime eats, we recommend the pimento BLT, french toast waffles, and house-cured lox. Edge Alley earns bonus points for making that great Southern staple, shrimp and grits, an all-day option.

Sunrise Memphis
670 Jefferson | 901-552-3168 | website
open daily | breakfast, lunch, & brunch
(Sunrise Memphis)
Sunrise Memphis offers breakfast and lunch, which includes the full breakfast menu. Their food is homemade, delicious, and fuss-free with several vegetarian options. Lunch includes sandwiches, salads, and burgers. We love the fried green tomatoes and sweet potato fries on the side. For breakfast, we recommend the Mother & Child Reunion—egg, fried chicken, house pickles, and tabasco honey sauce—or the bi bim breakfast bowl.

Evelyn & Olive
630 Madison | 901-748-5422 | website
open Tuesday - Sunday | lunch & dinner
(Evelyn & Olive)
Evelyn & Olive is an excellent choice for vegans and vegetarians but meat eaters will leave just as happy. They do Jamaican-Southern fusion like no other.

The dutch pots are delicious, the fried green tomatoes are tart and crispy, and we can get enough of those jerk wings. We also love their selection of Jamaican sodas, Jamaican lemonade, and rum cakes.
