First Memphis Black Restaurant Week has strong economic, social impact

As a result of Memphis Black Restaurant Week (MBRW), participating restaurant owners are still feeling the benefits after a week of showcasing their best Memphis dishes. MBRW Organizers tallied up the results of the economic impact of the week-long tour.

The week, organized by Cynthia Daniels, focused on supporting Memphis' African-American business growth and encouraging the city to be socially conscious consumers. MBRW proved to be successful not only for economic growth but also it illustrated the city's diversity. "Every participating restaurant saw an influx of Caucasian, Asian and Hispanic customers. Sounds like there is diversity in Memphis that supports the African-American community," said Daniels.

Over 3,000 patrons participated in the event contributing to an increased revenue of more than $85,000 which also created nearly 40 jobs. MBRW organizers plans to leverage the momentum of the event by hosting a community discussion around "Collective Economic Impact" to celebrate the outcomes of the campaign and challenge with the public to keep the support going. The event will be held at the Hattiloo Theatre on March 28 at 6pm.
