Grizzlies & iHeart Media join SCS for Destination 2025 kickoff celebration

Shelby County Schools Superintendent Dorsey Hopson shared his ambitious goals for the District Wednesday morning, March 4, at the Destination 2025 kickoff celebration held at Cummings School in South Memphis, a 2014-15 Distinguished School as recognized by the National Title I Association.

The District’s newly developed 80/90/100% Strategic Plan is designed to not only improve the quality of public education, but also create a more knowledgeable and productive workforce and ultimately benefit our entire community.

By 2025, SCS commits to ensuring that: 80 percent of students graduate college- and career-ready; 90 percent of seniors graduate on time; and 100 percent of students who are college- and career-ready participate in post-secondary opportunities.

"These goals are more ambitious than this community has ever attempted for our students, but I firmly believe they are attainable if all of our resources are aligned to this plan and vision," said Hopson.

Priority 1 in the 80/90/100% Strategic Plan centers on strengthening literacy. In support of this priority, new partnerships were announced during the event to reward students for growth in literacy on the upcoming TCAP and End-of-Course assessments.

The high school with the highest growth in literacy scores on this year’s test as compared to last year will receive a school-wide celebration hosted by K-97FM (iHeartMedia) featuring a surprise recording artist. Plus, the Memphis Grizzlies will award tickets to the entire student body from the elementary school and middle school with the highest growth in literacy scores on this year’s TCAP test, as compared to last year.

Today’s event featured a number of local leaders and special guests, members of the Shelby County School Board and students and faculty from Cummings K-8 School. The crowd enjoyed performances by Memphis Grizzlies mascot Griz, the Overton High School Ovation Choir and the Whitehaven High School marching band.
