Future optometrists learn procedures through advanced technology

Southern College of Optometry students were the first group of students in the state of Tennessee to witness live LASIK surgeries performed by Ophthalmologists from the Eye Specialty Group.

The first live streamed procedure was performed by Dr. Andrew Crothers, MD of Eye Specialty Group and narrated by Dr. Subba Gollamudi, MD Cornea, Cataract and Refractive Surgeon for Eye Specialty Group on July 27. The first surgery took place at the Collierville medical offices of Eye Specialty Group, while the students observed the operation at SCO’s Digital Observatory, which houses state-of-the-art video and audio capabilities for the purpose of education future optometrists.

Eye Specialty Group features innovative technology and a team of highly trained and respected doctors to provide convenient patient care. SCO promotes lifelong learning and educates the best possible healthcare providers. Both organizations used their reputations and advanced technology to educate bridge the educational gap among students.

State legislation in all US states except Kentucky and Oklahoma prohibits optometrists from performing laser procedures such as LASIK. Now, following the patients’ surgeries, they will visit SCO students for post-operational care.

Currently, SCO will be the only institution in Tennessee offering this opportunity to future optometrist.
