New housing planned for University District

More developments around the University of Memphis are in the works, with new expansions in student housing planned. A new off-campus tower at the corner of Mynders Avenue and Brister Street has been announced and will be home to 395 UofM students once the project is complete.

The timeline for the project is stil unclear, but before construction can begin Developer Memphis Student Housing LLC will have to will have to purchase six parcels demolish existing apartment buildings and other small housing structures on the corner. The new 7-story tower will have five floors of 120 units above above two floors of parking.

This project is the latest in the school's effort to reduce its commuter student population by creating more attractive housing options in and around campus. In July the Rael Development Corp. began construction on an $8 million, 64-unit apartment complex near campus, and the company has expressed interest in further investment for the area. In April of this year, the Highland Row project was announced. The new mixed-use, lifestyle center development in the University District will include 354 apartments and up to 38,000-sq. ft. of retail space in the vacant land just off Central Ave. on Highland, with a western border of Eastland and Midland to the south. The expected cost of the project, spearheaded by Milhaus Development out of Indianapolis and Memphis-based Poag Shopping Centers LLC, is $60.7 million.
