Bloodlines and bylines: Project Motion mines true Memphis stories

Project: Motion Modern Dance Collective digs deep into the stories that shape us with its May concert. The modern dance collective returns to the Evergreen Theatre for a moving experience of all-new dance works mined from true Memphis stories.

Guest artist and writer, Anna Esquivel, masterfully weaves stories of family harvested from writing and movement workshops Project: Motion held at Knowledge Quest Memphis, Madonna Learning Center, and Town Village at Audubon Park in the Fall of 2014. In Bloodlines + Bylines, Project: Motion premieres original choreography based on these stories by Bethany Wells Bak, Rebecca Cochran, Emily Hefley, Louisa Koeppel, and Wayne M. Smith. As a fascinating twist, the works will be presented in an open stage without wings, removing the boundaries between onstage and offstage so that dancers are performing continually throughout the show.

If your life's story were a dance, what would it look like? Bethany Wells Bak's piece embodies the stories of Margaret and her young son Terrance. Through the eyes of two lives that dash, chuckle, tumble, and sail, this playful dance “rumbles of messy, secure love.”

Louisa Koeppel explores Vivian, a writer and new mother struggling to find balance between creativity and maternal duties. Koeppel draws on personal experience, gesture, and the written word to bring to life the push and pull of the artist within.

Emily Hefley and Wayne M. Smith collaborate to bring to life the lively Sonya, who finds herself transplanted to the Deep South after being born in Brazil. The piece combines Smith's organic, fluid movement with Hefley's sharp, quick and quirky style set to traditional Bossa Nova selections and narrative text.

Rebecca Cochran’s “Life Through a Lens” explores the frailty of life and the gravity of preserving family chronicles. An excerpt from this piece was presented at MOMENTUM, The University of Memphis' faculty dance concert, April 10 -12, 2015.

Bloodlines + Bylines is sponsored by The Tennessee Arts Commission, ArtsMemphis, and Commercial Advisors, LLC.
