MEMFix brings urban revitalization to Film Row this Saturday

Livable Memphis will host its 7th installment of MEMFix on Saturday, September 24th in an effort to help revitalize Memphis’ historic film distribution center.

MEMFix is a series of community-driven events designed to rethink and activate streets and vacant storefronts, and test drive new neighborhoods in Memphis. The purpose is to provide neighborhoods with a tool to demonstrate the “art of the possible” by temporarily transforming one to two city blocks into a vibrant, people friendly neighborhood commercial corridor.

MEMFix: Film Row will take place from 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. downtown along Second Street, and will bring neighborhood residents and stakeholders together to reinvigorate vacant and underutilized commercial and recreational areas.

With pop up retail shops, walkability improvements, public art, food trucks, entertainment, and more, MEMFix: Film Row will showcase the South City neighborhood’s potential through participatory visioning and creative place-making.

At the event, Livable Memphis will also offer a Film Row and Heritage Trail History Tour with Dr. Earnestine Jenkins from the University of Memphis to help residents explore and discover the neighborhood.

Previous MEMFix and MEMShop events have been held throughout Memphis to temporarily create vibrancy and demonstrate new possibilities for various communities. Originally inspired by 2010’s New Face for an Old Broad - which kick started a renaissance of the Broad Avenue Arts District - past installments of MEMFix have also been held in Crosstown, Soulsville, the University District, the Edge district and the Pinch District neighborhoods. Each MEMFix neighborhood has since seen renewed interest and in some cases significant new activity or investments.

“We planned MEMFix: Film Row and set our focus on an area of downtown Memphis with a rich cultural and civil rights history,” said John Paul Shaffer, Livable Memphis Program Director.

“We believe there is great potential in the South City neighborhood and want to help with making it more enjoyable for all Memphis residents.”

A host of vendors and MEMshop businesses will be featured on Saturday, including: Southern Creed, Naturelle Cosmetique, Inclined Christian Design, Phillip Ashley Chocolates, Mbabazi’s House of Style, Klassy Chics Boutique, Replenish Kombucha, and Tako’s Treasures among others. Additionally, local artists The Pocket,DJ Spaceage, Tia Henderson, and Chris Milam will provide musical performances.

Event partners and sponsors include Livable Memphis, City of Memphis, UrbanArt Commission, Innovate Memphis, Communities Unlimited, Memphis Slim Collaboratory, Downtown Memphis Commission, McCormack Baron Salazar, Malco, Loaded for Bear, and Sue Layman Designs.
