When art intersects with social justice

Just City, a recently launched nonprofit that advocates for solutions in the criminal justice system, will host #SeeJustice, a multimedia art exhibition including visual art and performance to spotlight Memphis’ marginalized voices and to shed light on their interactions with the criminal justice system, including and especially indigent defense and other relevant topics.

The show will take place from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 26 at CoMotion Studio, 416 N. Cleveland St. in the Crosstown neighborhood. Featured artists include Aylen Mercado, Trayvius “Tray” L. Butler, Amie Vanderford, Christian “CLonzell” Williams, and Frankd.robinson,jr. The event will include food trucks and the Just City photo booth for attendees to describe what their vision of a “Just City” is and means.

Curated by local journalist, High Ground contributor and Just City Board member Elle Perry, the exhibit seeks to spotlight social justice issues relevant in Memphis to a wider audience in artistic fashion. Key themes of this exhibit are indigent defense, criminal justice reform, social justice, marginalized voices, and teen voices.

The reception is free and open to the public.
